Choose the day shape first
| Choice | Best fit | Plan around |
|---|---|---|
| Old City and one wall segment | First visits and iconic architecture | Timed entry, stairs, sun and crowd pressure can slow the route |
| Ground-level Old City | Shorter calls or lower-step planning | Polished stone and congestion still affect mobility |
| Coast or viewpoint with transport | Longer calls and repeat visitors | Protect the road return before adding a distant stop |
Gruž and the Old City are separate decisions
Dubrovnik Port Authority manages the international cruise and passenger port at Gruž. Treat the cruise berth, any shuttle or taxi, and the Old City gate as a transport chain rather than one walkable terminal experience.
The ship may publish a different arrival or tender instruction for a specific call. Use that written instruction, not a generic map pin, for the morning pickup and final return.
Choose a heat- and crowd-aware Old City plan
The walls create a memorable overview but require stairs, exposed walking and a meaningful time commitment. A ground-level route through the gates, main street and quieter lanes is easier to shorten if the port transfer runs late.
Do not add a cable car, island boat and full walls circuit simply because each appears nearby on a map. Entry queues and city congestion can turn a compact list into a fragile plan.
Protect the transfer back to the ship
Work backward from all-aboard through Old City traffic, the ride to Gruž, port security and gangway. Build extra margin when several ships are scheduled because road and taxi demand can rise quickly.
Re-verify for the exact call
- Exact berth, terminal or shuttle instructions for the sailing
- Ship time and published all-aboard time
- Timed-entry requirements for the chosen attraction
- Written pickup point and the complete return transport chain
- A personal return margin beyond the advertised journey time
