Ketchikan, or Kichxáan, is on the ancestral lands of the Tlingit people, and Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian traditions are not one generic “Alaska Native” story. Use the names and interpretations provided by the site, community or operator. Do not invent meanings from a pole’s figures or assume every carving is ancient.
Totem Bight’s official history explains that Native carvers restored or duplicated poles through a preservation program beginning in 1938. That context is different from encountering a contemporary carving program or community performance.
Downtown ships and Ward Cove ships start from different places
