Compare the itinerary before the logo
A familiar brand cannot compensate for a route that misses your primary glacier or compresses the port you care about. Build a shortlist of acceptable itineraries, then compare ships within that set.
Large ship, premium ship or small expedition vessel?
- Large resort ship: more activities, dining and family infrastructure; more people moving through ports.
- Premium mainstream ship: often a calmer onboard tone and strong observation areas; still a large-vessel itinerary.
- Small expedition vessel: nature access and activity can lead the experience; comfort and entertainment differ substantially.
Families should compare the actual ship
Brand reputation is not enough. Check cabin occupancy, connecting options, youth age bands, pool access in cool weather, observation areas and whether the daily rhythm suits your children or multigenerational group.
Six questions for every cruise line
- Does this sailing visit the glacier area I want?
- Are the port hours useful for my top shore priorities?
- Does the ship have comfortable indoor and outdoor viewing?
- Does the onboard pace fit my family?
- Can the line coordinate the land extension I want?
- What is included, and what requires separate planning?
